winter woods

Winter is the perfect season to walk outside and see wabi-sabi in the landscape. Here in the northeast of the USA winter is stark, quiet, and grey. To me, the artist Andrew Wyeth has captured the quality of rural life in New England. I find Wyeth’s simplicity and nostalgic expressions very wabi-sabi. His color palette is also aligned with the muted tones of wabi-sabi.

Although I don’t live in Maine, the rural quality and landscape here (minus the ocean) are similar. Wyeth is my influence as I head out into the woods and over the winding country roads to capture the bones of my local landscape. I wish we had more snow but it is what it is.
